Lesson: If looking to drop fat don’t eat quick acting carbohydrate too close to training. Fact 2: While there is some evidence to show fat oxidation is improved in conditions of limited carbohydrate availability it is also important to note this same condition also increases the rate of potential amino acid oxidation, meaning if you are relying on fasted training to boost fat loss. Fat loss is a complex problem With our focus on specific nutrients, intense nutrition counseling, dieting and processed food consumption over the past 30 years, body fat levels have also increased. In other words, more information, more dieting, more junk food has given us more fat. In keeping up with the 'Stuff I Don't Quite Understand (TM)' series, here's another concept that I still have yet to wrap my head around. The concept of 'fat oxidation' is often to as being a prominent marker of fat loss. Lyle McDonald, for example, has his UD2 diet built entirely around the concept of increasing fat oxidation as much as possible in the 'catabolic' phase of the week. He has you start off with a 'depletion' workout to burn up glycogen stores as much as possible. He then says that by doing so, whole-body fat oxidation increases - so he has the depletion workout basically set up as a sort of 'trick' to get you to burn more fat. My question: what does this exactly mean? Of course whole-body fat oxidation is going to increase, but why would that make a difference by the end of the week when you recarb?

You're declaring what you will do, how long you will do it and when you will do it. • Measurable. Future studies should address these limitations, document the outcomes that result from better physician training in lifestyle modification strategies and determine how to best routinely implement all aspects of the 5 A’s for weight management in family practice settings. ,,,, Introduction Obesity is an epidemic problem in the United States. Approximately 68% of US adults are overweight or obese (). To compound this problem, obesity has more than doubled in children and tripled in adolescents in the past 30 years (). Primary care physicians and practitioners (PCPs), including nurse practitioners and physician assistants, are at the forefront of addressing this epidemic and need tools to work effectively with their patients around weight loss. The 5 A’s is an emerging tool used by PCPs to encourage behaviour change among overweight and obese patients. The use of the 5 A’s as a behavioural change model has been gaining momentum as an all-purpose counselling model that can be used by providers to produce many types of desired behavioural changes, including smoking cessation, dietary change and reducing alcohol consumption and weight (). The 5 A’s may be implemented in approximately 5–10 minutes, allowing for integration into most office visits (,). The 5A’s is an acronym for ‘Assess, Advise, Agree, Assist and Arrange’. Originally modelled as the Four A’s construct (Ask, Advise, Assist, Arrange) by the National Cancer Institute to assist with smoking cessation, ‘Agree’ was eventually added as the fifth ‘A’ by the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care ().
